How did Exterior Sounds get its start?
In addition to developing a program for the gallery space, I wanted to develop a program for the streets and I liked the idea of enabling a point where passerby could trip on something sonically strange or perhaps out of place. Be it pop music, field recordings, noise, re-broadcast of a random location, comedy, cosmic shred, sultry turn of the 19th Century jams, poetry, bug-out, storytelling, law hearings, etcetera. They can tap into the box, listen for as long as they like and move on. I also liked the idea of setting up a system where the user has no control. We have control of so much these days, I like the idea of dropping something on the public with limitations. You can’t turn up the volume on the tracks, you can’t advance the audio if you don’t like what you’re hearing. What’s on when you tap into it is what you get. In some cases you might not even know what you’re listening to.
